Overview

The Schutzstaffel (SS) was an organization that existed from 1923-1945 in Nazi Germany during the era of World War II and of the Third Reich meaning "Protective Squadron." This organization was originally set up as a personal body guard unit for the Führer Adolf Hitler, and other major Nazi leaders. Men in the SS were considered to be the most "Racially Pure" humans in all of the world, according to Hitler and the idea of the Aryan Race. These men were theoretically physically and mentally superior to most other Germans becasue of their racially pure beings.

Formation of Evil

The SS was originally a small company from the Sturmabteilung (SA) called the Stabswache. It consisted of eight soldiers, and was first commanded by Emil Maurice. They appeard at Nazi party rallies and speeches to gaurd high ranking Nazi partisans. The Stabswache was abolished after the failed attempt at coup d'état (The attempt to overthrow a government by another political party) by the Nazi Party. Despite the Nazi's failure to gain control of Germany in 1923, the party stayed strong. In 1925 the Stabswache returned as the "Stosstrupp Adolf Hitler" with the privilage of guarding the Führer at Nazi events. Later in 1925, Hitler renamed the Stosstrupp to the "Schutzstaffel" and ordered that they be made a national force that would be appointed to guard various Nazi leaders.

SS Propaganda

Development of Evil

Until 1929 the SS was thought of as just a special battalion of the SA and consisted of only about 300 men. But in January of 1929, Hitler appointed Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler, and by the end of 1932 the SS had over 52,000 enlisted soldiers. Himmler used propaganda skills thay he observed from other military groups such as the Italian Blackshirts. The same year, the SS decided to individualize themselves by getting new uniforms different than the previous SA attire. In 1934 Hitler put the SS in charge of all the concentration camps in Europe. The SS was now in active duty, and was in use.

SS Branches

During the course of the War there were many different branches of the Schutzstaffel that were put in charge of many different duties. There was the Waffen-SS which meant "Armed Protective Squadron." They were put in place to fight important battles during the Second World War. The Allgemeine SS which meant, "Universal Protective Squadron" this branch of the SS could be used anywhere they were needed for the war effort. The SS Calvary Corps which rode horseback to appeal to the high class German people. And last the Germanic-SS was the SS force that was put in other occupied and allied countries to enforce the Nazi doctrine and anti-semitic policies.

Post-War SS Activities

At the end of World War II former SS officers gathered together in Argentina to form a fugitive network called ODESSA an acronym meaning "Organization of the former SS members" This group helped fugitive Nazi leaders get into hiding to escape consequences from the Nuremberg Trials. This organization helped people such as Josef Mengele, and Erich Priebke escape to countries in South America where they would be safe from attourneys and private investigators.
