before WWII in 1933 just before Adolf Hitler came into power, there were about 9,000,000 jews living in 21 different European countries. children were often seperated from there families in a struggle to survive. children were hidden in sewers, put on the kindertransport,, or they might have been sent to an orphanage of a different religion, or they were sent to death or work camps and parished. 1.5 million children were murdered during the Holocaust 1.2 million were Jewish, 10,000 were Gypsies, and 1,000 were Handicaped. after the Liberation of the Holocaust began in 1942 but beacuse camps were Liberated one at a time Liberation finally finnished in 1945, at this time all the camps were free but beacuse most of the Jewish people were malnurished and sick they might not even know where they are or if they have any family that has also suvived so they were sent to Displaced Persons camps (DP camps), DP camps were administered by the "UNRRA", they were usually set up on concentration or Labor camp grounds, except now they people were treated ethicly. there was an estimated 11 to 20 million people who were put in DP camps most of these people were survivors from Nazi concentration or Labor camps, or prisoners of war not all the people placed in DP camps were Jews.
on June 1945 after the war President Truman discovered how crowded these camps were so he decided to transport some of the Orphans to America. they stayed in YMCAs and other places of this nature. after they arrived they were sent to Foster homes and hopefully Adopted. some children like Sinaida Grussman (in photo above) had there picture taken and put in news papers, and Found person boards. to hopefully find her parents or relatives.
