Everday life of Women (Navi)

Page history last edited by Navi Kaur 1 yr ago

During the Holocaust, women had to suffer a lot!

Women had a unique experience; they were required to be caretakers, keepers of religion and a stabilizing unit of the family. An affront to womanhood was an affront to themselves as complete human beings. By removing women's hair, including body hair, at Auschwitz, the Nazi deconstructed their personalities. Womanhood in the Holocaust meant primarily affronts to womanhood as part of the general violence that paved the road to death.  There were so many ways the Nazi attacked women, they raped them, torched them and boated them up. In the camps, selection on the nude was daily fare. Some people used their sexuality to survive or in order to earn a favor, like saving a family member or to obtain a slice of bread. It was just a way to stay alive; the women back then did all this to survive but dying from the inside because of the horrible ways of living!

CAMPS

For the women life in the concentration camps and in the ghettos was often much harder to bear than for the men. In the camps they worked hard labor, and in the ghettos they supported their families. And sadly the biggest pain for them was not being able to feed their own children. Certain individual camps and certain areas within concentration camps were designed for female prisoners. In May 1939, the SS opened Ravensbook, the largest Nazi concentration camp established for women. Over 100,000 women had been incarcerated in Ravensbook by the time Soviet troops liberated in the camp in 1945.

During deprtation operations, pregnant women and mothers of small children were considered labeled," incapable of work". They were sent to killing centers, where camp officials often included them in the first groups to be sent to the gas chambers.

Forced Sterilization

The Nazi used two types of forced sterilization for women...

One: They could do anything to the women back then; the Nazi tortured them... by taking their babies from them, or even raping them!!!

Two: the Nazi took the women where ever they wanted they took them to military camps, and etc. Mostly places where they can suffer.

Women's Jobs

Women during the holocaust were assigned jobs. There were plenty of horrible and maybe some good jobs that the women would be forced to do. Some women even volunteered for jobs because they didn't want to just be tortured in the camps and etc. Some jobs the women got were...nurses, working in the military, cleaning after the Nazi party, and a lot more!!!!
